Who are the women from our lives? Mothers, sisters, wives and girlfriends – all these are only social roles that hide behind them persons with qualities, habits and preferences. You may acknowledge that you know them, and it is probably so! However, the question is how to discover the real woman behind the mother, daughter, friend or business partner that we have? How to determine if the person besides us is real and not just a belief about how a woman should be or simply the first impression we have formed about them (stereotypes)? But this is how our brain works: once we have the opinion formed about someone, it takes much time and effort to have the opinion revised.
Magenta Consulting managed to collect via the national survey Magenta National Screening, a variety of data in order to create an opinion about the women of today The survey was answered by 1400 participants, from which 775 were women. The data below represents the quantitative analysis of the Magenta National Screening survey. In the following lines we would like to propose you to check to what extent the results presented correspond with your opinion about who are the women around you
The woman of today is an active person that prefers either to earn some extra money in her free time, or to take care of her physical aspect by practicing sports (even if she does it less often as compared to men). You may think that the women of today are more concerned with their job or their looks, but, what a surprise to find out the following! Somehow, in-between the job and the gym, women manage to allot time for their spiritual, intellectual and social development. Womens curiosity, in general, and their interest in fashion, in particular, is manifested today by a higher level of frequency of theaters and cinemas. On average, women read around two-three books per year, as much as men read. A noticeable difference in terms of mass-media usage, is that women appeal to television, while men to press when they want to get informed on the local and world news. Also referring to media preferences, women purchase more often magazines priced above 30 MDL. Where there are more images than intellect stimulating contents may this be a conclusion-drawing criteria? Unlikely, most probably this is an indicator of woman’s desire to get updates on fashion news. In other words, we can infer that women are more concerned with their appearance, a fact which is appreciated by men (by the way who also read glossy magazines).
Despite the assumed fact that women are more talkative than men, the survey hasn’t revealed any significant differences on this matter.
Regarding the personal characteristics, women perceive and evaluate themselves more frequently as being emotional, a little reserved, sensitive, fragile and less reliable than men, among all the study participants. Even if we are used to envision business women as strong persons with tough personality, the current study revealed that these women actually consider themselves more fragile than the women involved less in business.
Regarding the professional status, the quality of being happy is more frequently met among the self-description of female pupils and students, rather than the description of the women employed in state institutions. Given the fact that good mood stimulates creativity, we consider that state institutions would only benefit from providing their female employees with good mood atmosphere, or… maybe all the serious women are more inclined working in governmental institutions. However these are only attempts to explain why the women employed in governmental offices are less joyful as compared to the interviewed students. All these suppositions may serve as a starting point for those interested in gender research topics.
It is more typical for women, rather than men to follow rules; rules which are set either by the society or even by themselves - women. Breaking these rules may badly upset women. Therefore, it is suggested to clarify the content of these rules in order to avoid potential misunderstandings with the women from your life. For example, in order to secure the good mood in the life of your women, you should note down that even though men related to the holiday of March 8th with indifference, women actually associate this day with positive and pleasant emotions. Another remark is related to the places where people prefer to spend their time out: men prefer terraces, while women favor mostly restaurants.
It might happen that the image of today’s woman described above does not correspond to your own experience. However this is just a confirmation of the variety of people in our world. The present study has more of normative features, describing the general tendencies in this area, rather than describing the specific individuals.
