Moldovans' opinion on the war between Russia and Ukraine

Since February 24, 2022, we have been living in the vicinity of a war that has changed not only the lives of all Ukrainians, but also of those who are not directly involved in this conflict. More than a million Ukrainians have left their homeland and taken refuge in neighboring countries. The Republic of Moldova has the largest number of refugees per capita.

In order to understand the attitude of Moldovans towards the Russian-Ukrainian war, but also their opinion about the security of the Republic of Moldova, we decided to implement an ad-hoc study to find out the opinion of the people.

61% of respondents believe that Russia is waging a war with Ukraine. This chart shows how correctly Moldovans are informed, taking into account Russian propaganda, which prohibits the use of the term "war" and replaces it with the phrase "military operation".

Respondents' views are divided when it comes to supporting one of the countries. In this conflict, 51% are on the side of Ukraine, and every fifth respondent is on the side of Russia.

Every second respondent has a positive opinion about the way Volodymyr Zelensky is handling this conflict (50%), while only 25% of respondents have the same attitude towards the way Russian President Vladimir Putin is handling the conflict.

When asked about the duration of the conflict, opinions were again divided, but still 46% of respondents believe that it will last 1 month or less, and 22% of respondents assume that it will last more than half a year.

Respondents responded to the extent that they believe this conflict is a danger to the security of the Republic of Moldova. 45% of them believe that Moldova is in great danger because of this conflict, another 21% believe that it is rather dangerous, and 30% believe that the conflict will not affect the country's security.

Since the beginning of the war between Russia and Ukraine, Moldovans have shown unprecedented solidarity and support. And the figures show the same thing, where 89% of interviewees expressed a positive attitude towards the fact that Moldova receives and helps refugees from the neighboring country.

In this context, the President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu submitted Moldova's application for European Union membership. This important step for the country's European future is supported by 61% of respondents.

Respondents were asked, without prompting, to list the three main sources of information about the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. About every fourth person (25%) indicated that they are informed about the conflict from the Facebook newsfeed. Other top sources that were named were TV channels (16%), Moldova 1 (15%), ProTV (14%) and TV8 (14%).
